Albany Rotary spends time volunteering at The RED (read each day) Bookshelf helping to prepare books for distribution throughout the capital region. They are a favorite community partner that is currently in our regular service night rotation.

While there, we sort and categorize donated books, review, clean and mend books so that they are in like-new condition before they land in the hands of their new owner.  Once the books are in tip top condition they are placed in schools, barbershops, health care offices and more awaiting a child to take them to their new home.

In the heart of Albany, tucked into community centers, clinics, barbershops, waiting rooms, and neighborhood gathering spaces, you’ll find something simple yet transformative: bright crimson shelves filled with free children’s books. These are part of The RED Bookshelf, a beloved local initiative dedicated to putting books directly into the hands of children—no sign-ups, no cost, no questions. Just take a book, read it, and keep it forever.

The idea is as vibrant as the shelves themselves: when books are readily available, reading becomes a natural part of everyday life. The RED Bookshelf team collects gently used and new children’s books from donors across the Capital Region. Volunteers then clean, repair, and sort each book by age level before stocking the signature red shelves. From board books for toddlers to adventure novels for teens, the collection is always changing, always growing, and always waiting for curious young readers to discover it.

For many children in Albany, these shelves are more than a source of stories—they are gateways. They spark imagination during long appointments, create calm moments in busy households, and help build confidence in early readers who may not have books at home. A child wandering over to a shelf might find a superhero tale to treasure, a science book that ignites a lifelong interest, or a story that mirrors their own life in a meaningful way.

What makes The RED Bookshelf truly special is the joy it brings. Teachers share stories of students proudly showing off the books they picked out themselves. Parents express gratitude for having access to reading materials that don’t strain the family budget. Community partners see firsthand how a simple shelf can bring families together.

In a world full of noise and distractions, The RED Bookshelf offers something wonderfully quiet and hopeful—a moment of discovery, a spark of curiosity, a love of reading nurtured one bright-red shelf at a time. Albany Rotary is proud to be a committed community partner, and you never know when you might see a caped Rotarian, some superheroes may just wear blue and gold.
